Amal Ismail

Amal Ismail shares her journey from a traditional healthcare career to building a global virtual functional medicine practice. Initially trained as a pharmacist, with further studies in bioscience enterprise at Cambridge, she spent years working across hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry, and as a consultant. Over time, she became disillusioned with what she describes as a “sick-care” system that focuses on managing disease rather than creating health. Her turning point came after discovering functional medicine, an approach centred on prevention, root-cause analysis, and understanding how lifestyle, nutrition, relationships, sleep, movement, environmental exposures, and genetics all interact to influence well-being. Leaving behind a senior leadership role, she committed fully to retraining and returning to patient-centred clinical work.

The conversation also explores the realities of building her own practice, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she transitioned to a fully virtual model with the help of a business coach. She reflects on the importance of mentorship, setting boundaries, and learning from mistakes, such as burnout, taking on too much alone, and making fear-driven decisions. Influenced by her parents’ resilience as refugee entrepreneurs, she views failure as an essential part of growth. Today, her business blends detailed clinical care with coaching support, allowing patients to make sustainable changes while enabling her to balance meaningful work with family life.
